L. Powers Sunday, July 1, 1990: Woke at 4:15, back to sleep till 7:15. Got up, fed Sam & let him out. Took shower, dressed. Put away clothes on bed, had breakfast. Finished getting ready for church, saw film on Martin Luther in S.S. Nancy & I talked to Pastor after church about joining, will be a couple of weeks yet before he will be able to have ceremony. Had coffee & cookies after church, got gas on way home. Changed clothes, put away a few more. Called Carla, went down & watched Centennial Train come in. Went to Boise, Carla not feeling too good so we sat & talked a while. Her entry way is lovely! really looks nice & she did a good job. Went to Plush Pippin for supper, tried several times to call Paula so left a message on her machine. Clouded up & wind really blew this eve, I got home about 8:30. Had a little lunch, worked on letters & watched TV. To bed at 12:40.
Monday, July 2, 1990: Woke about 4:30, again at 5:30 & at 6:30. Then about 7:20 got up, cloudy this morning. Fed Sam & let him out, dressed & went out to pick berries. Started to sprinkle, then rained pretty hard. Got my raincoat & umbrella so I didn’t get too wet, rained all morning. Had O.J. & Shake for breakfast, watched “Wheel of Fortune.” Started to water & fertilize Violets, didn’t get them all done. Watered & fertilized rest of flowers, worked in family room a little. Had lunch, put letter in mailbox. Let front awnings down a little, gathered up laundry. Put head down on table about 4:00; slept till 4:50! Got ready to go to game, Paula came & sat with me. Soon Mike came over, too, & then Paul & Ruthie. Cindy’s team won – she made the winning run. Good game. Paula & I went to KFC & had supper before she left. Got home about 9:00. Read paper, watched TV. Then VCR. To bed at 2:15.
CENTENNIAL – STATEHOOD DAY Tuesday, July 3, 1990: Woke a number of times but went back to sleep, got up about 7:30. Fed Sam & let him out, dressed & called Linda. Cool this morning so went for our walk. Put garbage out when I got back, washed off green plastic. Rolled up hose, tied up tiny chrysanthemums by drive. Picked snapdragon seeds, put out flag. Had O.J. & Shake for breakfast. Watered more violets, watched Cent. Celebration on TV. Mike came over & mowed my yard, I moved more flowers to the patio. Worked on family room, practiced on piano. Had lunch, think that’s all I did today. Got in mail & paper, changed clothes & went to Cindy’s game. They won again so play tomorrow A.M. Had a sandwich for supper, read paper & watched TV when I got home. To bed at 12:45.
Wednesday, July 4, 1990: Woke several times but didn’t get up. Finally woke about 7:40 & got up, fed Sam & let him out. Dressed, called Linda & we went for our walk. When I got home put macaroni on to cook & shrimp to soak in ice water, Paula called & then Judy. Finished watering violets, started to put salad together, time to go to Cindy’s ball game. They won their game, really played well so had to play again at 2:00. After 1st game – went by & picked up Judy, finished my salad. Cut & squeezed lemons for lemonade, fixed sandwiches for lunch. Went down & watched the game again, they won so were champions. When we got home Judy took a nap & I a shower, changed clothes & got ready. Carla & Bill came, took our stuff & went over to Nancy’s. They played croquet & we visited, had supper about 6:00. Really good! Went over to Paul’s & watched fireworks. Got home about 12:15. To bed at 1:10.
Thursday, July 5, 1990: Got up about 8:00, fed Sam & let him out. Dressed & had breakfast, went out & picked berries by garage. Sent some over to Nancy’s, Mike came & got them. Washed berries, put away those in fridge in the freezer. Had crax & pnut butter for lunch, tried to watch VCR & got hold of a bad tape. Now have to take it down for repair again. Laid down & took a nap from 2 to 3, then washed & changed. Got stuff ready to go downtown. Took Judy’s berries down, got milk at Alb. Went to Bank, P.W. Drug, then Paul’s for groc. Got home little after 6:00, put away groc. Had supper, watched TV. Meg came over & picked rest of berries. Paid her couple of dollars & gave her most of the berries for Linda. Did dishes & ran dishwasher this noon so emptied dishwasher tonite & did supper dishes. Washed load of col. clothes this morn, dried part. Soaked feet & watched TV. Read paper. To bed at 12:30.
Friday, July 6, 1990: Woke about 7:40, got up & fed Sam. Let him out, got dressed. Called Linda to tell her I couldn’t go walking, had to take the VCR down. When I got home – Shake. Had breakfast. trimmed more of dead shrub in front, watered all shrubs. Then watered flower bed S. of house. Washed & put up hair, dried rest of clothes. Folded & put them away, went down & sewed. Mended skirt, blouse, underwear, blue suit jacket. Got sleepy so laid down & took nap; no soaps today. Watched Jeopardy at 4:30, read papers. Went out & worked on patio, moved tables, etc., out. Swept up leaves & trash, washed down walls & floor. Moved flowers in shade in corner, didn’t get finished. Got in mail & paper, got supper. Did dishes, read paper & watched TV. Paula called today, may come over tomorrow. Guess she can’t go to Oregon so don’t know if I’ll go. Bed at 12:30.
Saturday, July 7, 1990: Woke about 4:40, back to sleep. Again at about 7:40, got up & dressed. Sam acted like he wasn’t feeling good, seemed allright this eve so hope he’s O.K. Called Linda & we went for our walk, put water on flower bed. When I got home started working on patio, got it pretty well cleaned up. Paula came before I was through & helped me, then she put diazinon on yard for billbugs & I had breakfast. After that went out & cut down honeysuckle to the ground, had grown up into the tree & lilac bush. Carried all cuttings to front, watered whole yard for diazinon. Hope it helps, came in & had some lunch, Paula left for home about 5:00. I soaked my feet as they were really hurting. Had light supper, read paper & worked X-words. Watched TV, brushed teeth. To bed at 12:10.
Sunday, July 8, 1990: Woke about 6:00, back to sleep till music woke me at 7:00. Got up & fed Sam, let him out. Found he had lost one of his lower fang teeth. Took shower, dressed. Had breakfast, got ready for church. Left about 9:00, was awfully sleepy in church. Got home about 1:00, stopped for ^few groc. on way home. Changed clothes, read paper a little. Washed berries, started getting supper. Carla came about 4:00, got rest of supper ready. Ate about 5:30, Carla left about 6:30. I cleared up & did dishes, read paper & watched TV. To bed at 12:10.
Monday, July 9, 1990: Woke about 4:30 & again at 6:20, back to sleep till 7:40. Got up & fed Sam, let him out. Dressed, called Linda. We went for our walk about 8:30, got back to her place just at 9:00. Were going to watch “Wheel” on her VCR but didn’t get it. When I got home picked part of berries, watered in corner in back. Also put water on E. end of flower bed. Laid down to rest. Nancy came over & stayed a while. Slept for about 15 min., worked on plaid pants. Had O.J. & Shake for breakfast, started to sort thru’ papers on table. Had another short nap. Went down & sewed on pants, watched Jeopardy. Went out & picked rest of berries, got in mail & paper. Did dishes in P.M., ran dishwasher & did dishes. Read paper, watched TV. Washed berries, washed face & brushed teeth. To bed at 12:40.
Baseball All Star Game tonite at Wrigley Field. AL won, 2-0. July 10, 1990: Woke several times, back to sleep. Woke about 7:00, got up soon after. Fed Sam & let him out, got dressed. Went out & picked berries by back fence, then called Linda & we went for walk. Watched “Wheel” at Lindas when we got home, when I got home emptied waste baskets & put garbage in front. Changed to dress, finished watering violets. Watered rest of flowers, had O.J. & Shake for breakfast. Finished reading paper, took 15 min. nap. Got out shoes for Linda, she came over in afternoon & picked a pair. Worked on Globe X-word, watched TV. Slept again, ripped out seams in plaid pants. Hot this afternoon, 102°. Supposed to get hotter. Got in mail & paper, brought back garbage cans. Made dressing for crab salad, had supper. Did dishes, washed berries. Soaked feet, read paper & watched TV. Brushed teeth. To bed at 12:45.
105° Wednesday, July 11, 1990: Woke at 4:30, back to sleep. Woke a number of times, got up about 7:00. Fed Sam, let him out. Dressed, went out & used trimmer. Dug dandelions out of front lawn, dug “ [dandelions] crabgrass & bentgrass in back. Came in & got groc. lists ready, Cindy came & mowed about 10:30. After that I took shower, got ready to go downtown, had O.J. & Shake for breakfast & sandwich & milk for lunch. Got sleepy so took nap, went downtown about 2:00. Boy, was it HOT! Went to Vets, Alb. for milk, pd. water bill, picked up VCR, to Bank, P.W. Drug for Med., M&W for groc., Pauls. Got home about 4:40. Hooked up VCR, put groc. away. Got supper, did dishes. Read paper, watched TV. To bed at 12:10.
LINDA left for Minneapolis? 8:15 Denver 9:15 1 hr. layover 10:15 2 hrs. to M. 12:15 105° again today. July 12, 1990: Woke about 6:00, back to sleep. Again at 7:30, got up & fed Sam. Let him out, got dressed & went for my walk. Cloudy so not so hot. Picked berries when I got back, watered flowers on patio. Dug some more crabgrass, came in & rested. Watched VCR a while, had O.J. & Shake. Washed load of colored clothes, dried part. Hung up & put away in eve. Found bank statement, so reconciled check book, Cindy called & I had to drive girls on paper route. Didn’t take us long, done by 5:15. Watched rest of Jeopardy on VCR when I got back, got in mail & paper. Got supper, ate & then did dishes. Read paper, watched TV. Watched VCR again, dried more clothes. Put whites to soak. To bed at 12:25.
103° today. Friday, July 13, 1990: Up at 6:30, read a little & back to sleep. Woke at 7:30, got up & fed Sam. Let him out, dressed. Went for my walk, watered planter on my way. When I got home finished trimming off dead shrub, cut old buds off peonies. Cut branch out of big N.W. shrub, trimmed burning bush. Put water on new shrubs, also on spots in yard. Came in & rested a little, watched “Wheel.” Had O.J. & Shake, changed to sundress. Washed white clothes out of rinse, washed load of whites. Finished dry colored clo., dried whites. Folded, hung up & put away, had lunch. Soaked feet for about an hour, watched VCR again. Got in mail & paper, fixed supper. Put away berries, washed another batch. Did dishes, read paper. Megan & Cindy over a little while. Played Falling Waters for them. Watched TV then VCR. Brushed teeth, to bed at 1:15.
Saturday, July 14, 1990: Woke at 6:30, back to sleep. Again at 7:45, got up & fed Sam. Let him out, got dressed. Went for my walk, brought home little pine tree. Hope it grows, have some Easter lilies in bloom. When I got home watered planter in front, dug a few dandelions. Watered new shrub, dry spots in lawn. Went out & picked berries in back, think this will be the last. Dug out dandelions & crabgrass in back. Nancy brought my chair over. Asked them over for dinner tomorrow, also Paul. Called Ted later in afternoon & he said they could come, too; tried to get Paula but not home. Had O.J. & Shake. Rested & watched VCR a while, dried rest of clothes. Vacuumed living room, hall, kitchen, both baths, dining room, & utility; worked in family room. Got in mail, got supper. Did dishes, ran dishwasher. Read paper, watched TV. To bed at 12:55. Hot again today.
Hot again today. Sunday, July 15, 1990: Woke about 4:30, back hurt so bad I could hardly bend over. Fed Sam & opened up doors, went back to sleep till 6:40. Got up & let Sam out, took shower. Had breakfast, back still hurting some so didn’t make it to adult Bible class. Finished getting ready & went to church, Youth group held services today. Really enjoyed it, they did a nice job. Didn’t stay for coffee, stopped & got meat, salad & melon for supper. Changed clothes, made bed. Paula called, said they had work to do & couldn’t come. Then Carla called, too, & said she couldn’t make it. Cut up melon, snapped & washed beans. Set table, fixed salad. Peeled potatoes, put meat on to cook. Paul got back in time for supper, Ted & Matt got here about the same time. Had a good supper, visited a while & then they left. I cleared up & rinsed part of dishes, put away food. Watched TV, also VCR a while. Kind of tired but back feels better. To bed at 1:05.
Still hot – 103°. Monday, July 16, 1990: Woke at 6:30, back to sleep till 7:30. Got up & dressed, fed Sam & let him out. Went for my walk, checked on CC & Abner on the way. When I got home went out in back & worked on crabgrass till I ran out of shade. Had OJ & Shake, rinsed rest of dishes. Had short nap, ran dishwasher. Cleaned off tables, both; also stove. Got washed & changed clothes, went to P.O. & mailed papers for Nancy. When I got home stopped & checked on pets. had supper, leftovers from last nite. They came at 6:30 & we went over to get Linda, plane right on time. Got home about 8:30, read paper & watched TV. Went over & checked on pets again, CC came in & ate & went back out again. Abner came in & laid on couch. I then watched VCR a while. To bed at 12:35.
96° today Tuesday, July 17, 1990: Woke about 6:30 & again at 7:30. Got up, fed Sam & let him out. Dressed, called Linda & we went for our walk. Went down & took care of pets, took Abner along on our walk. When we got back I watered planter in front, watered plants on patio. Dug dandelions & crabgrass in back till nearly noon. Went down & took care of pets again, had O.J. & Shake & watched “Wheel.” Read paper, watched TV. Watered rest of flowers inside, soaked my feet. Did rest of dishes & ran dishwasher, put out garbage in A.M. Watched VCR a while, then Jeop. Went down & put C.C. out, watered planters this A.M. Got in mail & paper, got supper. Emptied dishwasher, put away good dishes & silver. Did dishes, read paper & watched TV. Took care of pets again, watched 911 on VCR. To bed at 1:00.
Little cooler today but still hot. Wednesday, July 18, 1990: Woke about 6:30, back to sleep till 7:40. Got up, fed Sam & let him out. Took shower, dressed. Went down & took care of Ab & CC, when I got home pulled dandelions & crabgrass in front lawn. Went in & had O.J. & Shake, watched “Wheel of Fortune” on VCR. Linda called about her beans, said I’d take them to her. Brushed teeth & washed face, took beans & berries over to her. Finished getting ready & got lists ready, left about 11:30. Went to C. to C. & got another white chair, also another garbage can w/wheels. To Alb. for Acids milk, then to Paul’s for groc. Got home about 1:10, unloaded car. Put away groc., had lunch. Watched TV, took nap. Worked Globe X-word, wrote letter to Ann. Went down at 5:00 & took care of pets, got in mail & paper. Got supper, did dishes. Finished X-word, read paper. Took care of pets again, let CC out & Ab in. To bed at 12:45.
Little cooler today but still hot – 95° Thursday, July 19, 1990: Woke at 6:30, back to sleep till 7:40. got up, fed Sam & let him out. Sewed seam in white pants, got dressed. Went down & took care of pets, took Ab along on my walk. When I got home got rid of grass in front, filled in w/dirt. Worked on crabgrass in back, then picked R.-berries for last time. Glad that’s over. Had O.J. & Shake, watered end of flower bed. Watched “Wheel” on VCR, planted little trees I bro’t home. Read papers, watched TV. Feet hurting so I soaked them for about 1 ½ hrs., watched Pres. Bush’s plane land in Boise. Saw motorcade come downtown to City Hall, went down & checked on pets. Got in mail & paper, got supper, Did dishes, read paper & watched TV. Also watched VCR, went down & took care of pets. Washed & sugared berries, to bed at 12:25. Rosie called tonite – talked to her & Alice.
Cloudy till about noon so nice but hot again in afternoon. Friday, July 20, 1990: Woke at 5:30, back to sleep till 7:40. Got up & fed Sam, let him out. Dressed, called Linda but she was irrigating so didn’t walk. Went down & took care of pets, went for my walk. Went down & watered Nancy’s flowers when I got home. Filled in spot in front yard w/dirt, seeded it w/new grass. Watered dry spots, also trees. Watered planter in front. Worked on crabgrass in back. Had breakfast, went down to let CC out but he didn’t want to go. Soaked my feet for about 1 ½ hrs., looked at mail & watched TV. Read old papers, Nancy called & they got home O.K. Got in paper, Paula called. They’re coming over to golf, we’ll get something to eat & said she’d cut my hair. Got supper, did dishes. Read paper, watched TV. Linda called – Pat Taylor died. Funeral Monday. To bed at 1:20.
Saturday, July 21, 1990: Woke at 6:00, read a little. Went back to sleep till 7:30. Got up & fed Sam, let him out. Dressed, called Linda & we went for our walk. Air kind of cool this A.M. Rolled up hoses, went out in back & worked on crabgrass. Came in about 10:30, had O.J. & Shake. Watched VCR a little, started to water violets. Rested & read old papers, washed & changed clothes. Paula & Jim came, I washed my hair & Paula cut it. Then put it up for me. Mike came to mow the yard, I moved the car out. Dried my hair, combed them out. We went to Olga’s for supper, had a chicken salad. Ordered flowers for Pat Taylor, funeral Monday. Paula & Jim left when we got back, I watched TV & read old papers. Called Elaine, got Al. Said they would be looking for us. Got some clothes out. Watered rest of flowers, brushed teeth. To bed at 12:25.
Sunday, July 22, 1990: Woke several times, went back to sleep. Woke about 6:30, fed Sam & went back to bed but didn’t sleep. Got up at 7:00, let Sam out. Took shower, dressed. Had breakfast, finished getting ready. Washed car window & other sprinkles, left for church about 9:00. Everyone seemed sad & quiet today, had coffee after church. Stopped at Paul’s on way home & got grapes, apples, & card for Jim. Changed clothes, had coffee & toast. Wrapped gifts, finished watering violets. Watered flowers on patio, Carla came. Started supper, she washed her hair & I trimmed it for her. Finished up supper & we ate, she left about 7:00. Watched “Murder, She Wrote” & cleared up table. Did dishes & ran dishwasher, watched TV. Packed suitcase & got stuff ready to go, called Linda & we talked a while. Cooked mac. for salad & got it ready to mix, pretty much ready, I guess. To bed at 12:50.
Monday, July 23, 1990: Woke to thunder & lightning this morn., had a little rain too. Got up at 7:00, fed Sam but made him stay in. Went to funeral, mixed up salad before I left. Was a nice service & lots of people there. Got the meat at R&B for Linda. Didn’t go to Cem. Took Sam out to vets. when I got home. Made tea, got stuff ready to go. Nancy, Mike & Cindy came over & told us goodby. Got to Pendleton about 5:00 P.D.T., got a room at Motel 6. Ate at Kopper Kitchen next door. Drove around Pendleton, worked X-word. To bed at 11:30 P.T.
Tuesday, July 24, 1990: Woke about 3:30, got up but went right back to sleep. Got up about 7:00, dressed & got ready to go. Ate breakfast at McDonald’s, then on to Maryhill.Got there about 9:30-10:00, left about 1:00. It’s quite a fascinating place, lots to see. Saw the Stonehenge replica also, then went on. Took the old highway & saw the falls – Horsetail, Multnomah, On[e]onta, La Tourelle, etc. Got by Portland OK, oh yes, ate lunch at McDonald’s at The Dalles. Hit a detour at Tigard (?), got to Newport about 8:00. Have a nice Motel room at Shilo Inn. Rested a while, then ate at Shilo Cafe. I’m so full! Came back & got ready for bed; washed face, brushed teeth, etc. To bed at 12:00. Sight-seeing tomorrow.
Wednesday, July 25, 1990: Went to Shilo Cafe for breakfast. Then went to Wax Museum. Shopped a little, then came back to room. Linda, Meg & Molly went to little mall to shop but I was tired so stayed here & slept. Had a long nap. Went to Lacey’s Doll Shop – had all kinds of dolls, antique dishes, etc. We spent from 4 to about 6:30 in there – was very interesting. Stopped at Boiler Bay, took Otter Rock loop, & saw Devil’s Punch Bowl on way back. Went to The Apple Peddler for supper. Not as good as Shilo Cafe I don’t believe. Got a Globe Mag. today so worked on X-word. Took shower. To bed at 11:15.
Thursday, July 26, 1990: Got up about 7:30. Got ready & went to McDonald’s for coffee, had roll & butter in our room. Got our stuff all together & checked out of Motel. Took our coffee, etc., up to light house, went down steps to tide pools & saw hermit crabs, anemones, little fish & star fish. From there went downtown, got little gifts for Paula & Carla. Went to haunted lighthouse, very interesting. Had lunch at McDonald’s, got a crockery pot. Left for Salem about 3:00, got to Elaines about 5:00. Visited a little and looked around the yard – just beautiful! Then Jane ^& Ammie came down & after a while Carl came. Had such a good supper. Meg & Molly went home w/Jane. We visited some more, to bed at 11:40.
Friday, July 27, 1990: Woke about 3 times in the night, last time about 7:30. Didn’t go back to sleep, read a while & finally got up. Washed & dressed, got things packed & ready to go. Had roll, coffee & O.J., then went down to Janes. She had fixed breakfast for us, Jill & baby Adrienne were there. She’s really cute. Carla, little Carl & Nels came in while we were there. Left for home about 11:45, had no trouble at all. Ate at K.F. Chicken in Pendleton, got home about 9:45. Took Molly home first, then me. Nancy, Mike, & Cindy saw us so came right down, gave them their souvenirs. Remembered I forgot Judy, guess I’ll have to get her something here. Nancy forgot to get Sam for me, I’ll get him tomorrow. Called Carla & Paula, also Judy. Looked at pix in mail. To bed at 1:10.
Saturday, July 28, 1990: Woke at 3:30, 6:30 & 7:30, tired so I read a little & didn’t get up till about 8:30. Dressed, had breakfast. Got ready & about 9:30 called Cindy & we went to get Sam. He was out & walking around the office, the minute he saw me he came over & started talking & never stopped, even after we got home. Stuck to me like a burr all day. We went out & trimmed all around yard, tied up some sunflowers, etc. Hot & tired when I came in so laid down & rested. Sam right w/me. Paula came & we looked at pix. Both got sleepy so we laid down & took a nap. Then Paula played piano & I washed & put up hair. I dried hair & fell asleep again. Nancy invited us for supper but Paula & Jim didn’t stay. Went over about 6:30, Mike B-B-Qed shish-ke-bobs. He does pretty good. L & T. there, too. After supper Cindy mowed my yard, I emptied dishwasher, rinsed dishes. To bed at 12:15.
Sunday, July 29, 1990: Woke several times, musical alarm went off at 7:00. Was pretty tired so didn’t get up right away, finally did about 7:30. Fed Sam & let him out, took shower. Dressed, had ham, egg & cheese sandwich. Finished getting ready, nearly made it to Bible class. Read a little, etc., went to church. Stayed for coffee afterwards, stopped at Albertsons for milk. Carla called soon after I got home, had headache so decided not to come over. Changed clothes, read paper some. Had some lunch, went in & watched VCR. Got sleepy so took nap, then fixed supper. Did dishes, watched TV. Soaked feet, read paper. Went in & watched VCR again. To bed at 12:10.
Monday, July 30, 1990: Woke at 4:30, heard sprinkler come on N. of house. Back to sleep till 7:30, got up at 7:45. Dressed, went out & worked on crabgrass a little. Came in & fed Sam, opened his door. Called Linda but she couldn’t walk today, went by myself. When I got back moved planter back on stump, then worked on crab grass again. Came in & had breakfast, watched VCR (Wheel). Started to water violets, paid Kay’s Bouquets & P.W. Drug bills. Looked for Motor Club & Reader’s Digest bills but didn’t find them yet. Laid down & took nap, then had lunch. Read paper, looked at coupons from garage. Took another nap about 4:00, got in mail & paper. Looked at mail, storm blew up. Got supper, did dishes. Read paper, watched TV. Judy called & Nancy came over a little. To bed at 12:55.
Put garbage out. Tuesday, July 31, 1990: Woke about 6:00, –fed Sam back to sleep till 7:30. Got up, dressed. Went out & worked on crabgrass, came in about 8:00 & called Linda. We went for our walk, when I got home carried planter back to stump. Went out & worked on crabgrass again, came in about 10:30. Had breakfast, watched “Wheel” on VCR & rested. Linda came & brought some stuff, showed her my pix. Nancy came over & asked me to go to Boise to get Paul tonight. Had lunch, readdressed Ann’s card & mailed it. Rinsed dishes, ran dishwasher. Made nectar, filled hummingbird feeders. Looked for bills, watched TV. Took short nap, watched Jeopardy. Washed & changed clothes, got in mail & paper. Got supper, got ready to go. Read paper & watched TV, left for Boise about 9:15. Paul’s plane on time, got home about 11:00. Watched Matlock on VCR, to bed at 12:30.
